Black Friday is a great time to buy an e-bike, and a bad time to rush the decision. Countdown timers and "ends tonight" banners push you to check out before you have compared the things that actually decide whether you'll enjoy the bike for years. This checklist takes about 15 minutes and works for any brand. Do it before the sale starts, and you can buy with confidence the moment it opens.
Looking for this year's Macfox offers? Our Black Friday 2026 e-bike deals page has the dates and details. Come back here to make sure the bike you pick is the right one.
1. Rider Height and Fit
Fit comes first, because no discount fixes a bike that's too big or too small. Check the recommended rider height on the product page, not just the frame or wheel size. For reference, Macfox lists these ranges:
- Macfox M16: riders 4'0"–5'3"
- Macfox X7: riders 5'1" and up (X7L: 5'3" and up)
- Macfox X1S: riders 5'3" and up
- Macfox X2 Pro: riders 5'3" and up
If the rider sits near the edge of a range, read our guide on what size electric bike to get before you order.
2. Class and Top Speed
In most U.S. states, the e-bike class decides where you can ride and, for younger riders, whether they can ride at all. Class 2 means a throttle plus pedal assist, with motor help ending at 20 mph. Class 3 assists up to 28 mph and carries more age and path restrictions in many states. A bike sold as "up to 30 mph" or more may not count as an e-bike where you live. Every Macfox model is Class 2 with a 20 mph top assisted speed. For the details, see e-bike classes explained, and if the bike is for a teen, check e-bike age requirements by state.
3. Safety Certification
Look for UL 2849 certification of the whole e-bike electrical system (battery, charger and motor working together), not just a certified cell or charger. Some states and cities now expect it, and it's one of the clearest signs that the battery system was tested as a unit. All Macfox models are UL 2849 certified.
4. Range You Can Actually Use
Listed range is measured under favorable conditions. Cold weather, hills, rider weight and heavy throttle use all shorten it. A simple rule: take your longest regular round trip and make sure it fits comfortably inside the low end of the listed range. If it doesn't, look for a dual-battery option. Our article on how to estimate real e-bike range walks through the math.
5. Bike Weight and Where It Will Live
An e-bike that's hard to lift is an e-bike that stays in the garage. Think about stairs, an apartment elevator, a car rack or a school bike rack. As an example, the Macfox X1S is listed at 65 lbs and the X7 at 87 lbs. Our X1S vs X7 comparison shows how that difference feels day to day.
6. Rider and Cargo Weight Limit
Add the rider, a backpack and anything on a rear rack, and compare the total with the listed limit. Staying under it protects the frame, brakes and tires. The Macfox X1S lists a 220 lb rider weight limit and the X7 lists 330 lbs.
7. Tires and Ride Feel
Wider tires add grip and comfort on rough pavement, gravel and wet roads, while narrower tires feel lighter and quicker on smooth streets. The X7, for example, runs 4.5" front and 5" rear fat tires for a planted feel. Decide which roads you'll ride most, then pick the tire that matches.
8. Brakes
A heavier bike moving at 20 mph needs strong, consistent brakes. Check whether the bike uses mechanical or hydraulic disc brakes, and look at the rotor size if you plan to ride hills or carry a passenger's worth of gear. Our e-bike safety checklist covers what to inspect after delivery.
9. Warranty, Returns and Who Services It
Before you check out, read three things: how long the warranty lasts and what it covers, how the return window works, and who will help you if something needs adjusting. A good deal from a brand with no support is not a good deal. Our guide on who will service an e-bike you buy online lists the questions to ask. Macfox e-bikes come with a 2-year warranty and support from our U.S.-based team, and you can also find local Macfox dealers if you prefer in-person help.
10. Delivery Timing and Setup
If the bike is a holiday gift, check the shipping timeline and plan for assembly and a full first charge before the big day. Buying for a teen? Our holiday e-bike gift guide for teens helps you match the model to the rider.
Before the Sale Starts: A Quick Prep List
- Measure the rider's height and write it down.
- Note your longest regular round trip in miles.
- Check your state's class and age rules.
- Shortlist two bikes and open their product pages in tabs.
- Decide on add-ons you actually need, like a rear rack, lights or a second battery.
FAQ
Is Black Friday a good time to buy an e-bike?
It often is, because many brands run their biggest sale of the year. The key is to choose the right model before the sale starts, so the discount is a bonus rather than the reason you bought.
Should I buy a cheaper e-bike just because it's on sale?
Only if it fits the rider, meets your local class rules and has UL 2849 certification and real support behind it. A bike that misses any of those can cost more later.
Are Black Friday e-bikes older models?
Sometimes. Check the model year and the spec list on the product page. If a previous-year model is on sale, our guide to buying a previous-year e-bike explains what to look for.
Which Macfox model is best for a teen?
It depends on height and riding. Our electric bikes for teens collection sorts the lineup by rider height.
